UN, more than 4.7 million Ukrainians have fled the war

More than 4.7 million Ukrainians have fled in the 50 days since the invasion of Russia. This was announced today by the United Nations, stating that 4,736,471 Ukrainians have left their country since the beginning of the Russian assault on 24 February. The figure is up 79,962 from yesterday’s tally. Women and children account for 90 percent of those who fled. Nearly two thirds of all Ukrainian children have been forced to flee their homes, including those who are still inside the country.
In addition to refugees, the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that 7.1 million people have fled their homes but are still in Ukraine. “The humanitarian needs of internally displaced people in Ukraine continue to grow,” the IOM said.
According to the United Nations, nearly six out of 10 Ukrainian refugees – 2,694,090 so far – have entered Poland.
