Two mangoes from Miyazaki prefecture in southwestern Japan were bought for 500,000 yen at the first auction of the year, the equivalent of nearly 3,650 euros. The amount is two and a half times higher than the amount paid in 2021, equaling the record set in 2019.
The two fruits of the premium category are called ‘Taiyo no Tamago’, or ‘Eggs of the sun’, a distinction that characterizes mangoes weighing at least 350 grams, with a high sugar content and about half the surface. covered with a bright reddish tint. According to the local Federation of Farmers, the harvest season for premium mangoes is expected to peak between late April and early June.
The representative of the JA Miyazaki cooperative who organized the auction, Tomohiro Ishikawa, stressed the efforts of local growers to ensure the excellent quality of the fruit despite the high prices for the procurement of raw materials.
