Turkey attacks Kurdish PKK bases in northern Iraq

The Ankara army has launched an operation against the bases of the Kurdish PKK armed group in northern Iraq near the border with Turkey. This was announced by Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, as reported by the Anadolu agency, speaking of air strikes during the night in the regions of Zap, Metina and Avasin Basyan.
According to the Ministry of Defense, shelters, ammunition depots, tunnels and bases of the Kurdish forces were destroyed.
Members of the Army’s special teams are operational in the field and attack helicopters, drones and artillery components are also used.
The defense ministry said that the operation was launched according to the principle of “self defense” due to a “large-scale attack” that would have been planned by the Kurdish forces.
The military action represents a new phase of the campaigns against Kurdish forces initiated by the Ankara army in 2020 and referred to as the “claw” (Pençe).
The PKK is considered by Turkey – as well as by the US and the European Union – a terrorist organization. The conflict between the Ankara Army and the Kurdish armed forces has been ongoing for about 40 years and has caused the deaths of at least 40,000 people.
