Covid: Shanghai attempts to open, Tesla sleeps in the factory

(ANSA) – BEIJING, APRIL 20 – Shanghai is preparing to ease measures to contain Covid-19 and to restart production plants, albeit in a gradual and controlled manner, while a maximum peak of 477 container ships was recorded in its port as of April 11, based on Bloomberg calculations.

Since the start of the Omicron wave, at the end of February, the Chinese financial hub has reported over 340,000 cases, mostly asymptomatic, forcing local authorities, under the ‘zero tolerance’ policy of Covid, to close commercial activities and factories for at least three weeks with serious repercussions on local and international production and supply chains, further exacerbated by the closure of roads inside and outside the city.

Major companies including Tesla and Volkswagen are among 666 companies that could have resumed operations this week, under bubble management, according to authorities. A memo released by Tesla, for example, stipulated that employees should sleep in the factory with the company supplying sleeping bags, mattress and daily meals.

Drone footage released by Chinese media today showed employees of Elon Musk’s company arriving at the factory with luggage. Volkswagen, which has restarted production in Changchun following the easing of restrictions in Jilin, is studying the feasibility of restarting operations in Shanghai as well. (HANDLE).
