Ukraine: Denmark prepares plan for autonomy from Russian gas

(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 19 – District heating, heat pumps, biogas and massive development of wind and solar energy: the Danish government has presented a plan to become independent from Russian gas after the invasion of Ukraine. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had set a goal in early March to get out of Russian gas “as quickly as possible”. The plan presented on Tuesday by the executive specifically foresees that half of the 400,000 Danish households currently heating with gas will switch to a connection to district heating or heat pumps powered by electricity by 2028.

For the remaining households and industry, the plan also includes the development of biogas from renewable sources, “which will ensure that we are free from Putin,” Climate and Energy Minister Dan Jorgensen said at a press conference. The Danish government has also stepped up its plan for the development of renewable energy, and now plans to quadruple solar plants and especially onshore wind by 2030. The Scandinavian kingdom is already one of the great European wind power champions, which it currently supplies it with about half of its electricity, the rest is dominated by biomass and coal.

“We want to develop renewable energies as intelligently as possible,” assured Frederiksen. Gas provides around 18% of the energy consumed in Denmark each year, according to official statistics. Much of it has long come from the country’s North Sea fields, but these are in rapid decline. In 2019, domestic production covered only 72% of the gas consumed in the country, according to the Danish Energy Agency, with Russia among the main suppliers of imports. Russia supplies around 40-45% of the gas imported into the European Union. The 27 EU countries are working to get out of Russian gas, but this effort, according to analysts, will take several years.
