Afghanistan: death toll rises to 16 in the two attacks

(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 21 – Sixteen have died in two attacks that took place this morning in Kabul, both claimed by Isis.

In the first, 12 people died in the explosion that occurred at the Shia mosque in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif: this is the second attack on a Shiite target in three days. At that time, the mosque was packed with worshipers for midday prayers during Ramadan, the holy month of Islam. The injured are 58, including 32 in serious condition. The images filmed immediately after the attack show the victims covered in blood as they are loaded on stretchers and taken to the hospital amidst the screams of those present. “The soldiers of the caliphate managed to carry a bag with explosives” inside the crowded mosque, causing it to explode from afar, the Islamic State said in a statement.

The second attack took place in Kunduz: the provincial police spokesman said that a bomb was placed on a bike that exploded next to a car carrying mechanics working for a Taliban military unit. The dead are 4, while the injured are 18. The Islamic State has claimed that its fighters detonated a bomb on a bus carrying employees of Kunduz airport.

Taliban authorities have promised to punish those responsible for the bloodshed while last Tuesday’s attack against the Abdul Rahim Shahid boys’ school in Kabul in which 4 people died has not yet been claimed (although press sources spoke of 25 victims ) with a high but unspecified number of injuries.
