Migrants: Tunisia, more than 20,500 people arrested in 2021

(ANSA) – TUNIS, APRIL 21 – Tunisian authorities arrested 20,616 people last year in an attempt to illegally reach the coasts of Italy. This was announced by the director general of the Tunisian coast guard department at the Ministry of the Interior, Walid Ben Ali, during a meeting with local and international media to illustrate the ministry’s activities and improve relations with the press.

Of the arrested 10,245 have Tunisian citizenship, 10,371 are foreigners, 90% of whom are from sub-Saharan Africa. On the other hand, migrants detained from the beginning of the year until 20 April are 3,160, of which 2,249 are foreigners and 911 are Tunisians.
