Serbia: Vucic, forward towards the EU but defending our interests

For President Aleksandar Vucic, Serbia’s place is in the European Union, and the country must continue on the path that leads to the EU, but at the same time defending its interests and specificities. After a poll yesterday showed that for the first time the majority of Serbs no longer support Belgrade’s EU membership, Vucic said: “We must protect what is ours and our decision-making independence, at least until we will not become a member of the EU. Since everything is different when you are a member of a club, but even then no one deprives you of your voice, your brain or your language, “Vucic said, quoted in the media.
And with reference to the EU’s decline in popularity among the Serbian population, the president said he believed that one of the causes is linked to the pressure from the European Union on the issues of Kosovo and sanctions on Russia, to which Belgrade refuses to join. . On the no to sanctions, he observed, Serbia pays a high price.
The Ipsos poll released yesterday revealed that in a possible referendum on membership, 43.8% would say no to Belgrade in the EU, compared to 34.9% yes. 21% said they did not have a precise location or did not want to disclose it.
