Covid: Malta returns to normal, off the masks

(ANSA) – VALLETTA, APRIL 22 – Malta returns to pre-Covid normality, after two years it gives goodbye to masks and all anti-pandemic precautions. From May 2nd, protections will no longer be mandatory anywhere including public transport. Only exceptions: arriving or departing flights, hospitals and nursing and inpatient homes. In addition, passengers arriving in the archipelago will no longer have to fill in the Passenger Locator Form, there will be no more restrictions for wedding parties or any other social event and even those who live with a positive will not have to undergo quarantine unless they manifest symptoms. The turning point that brings social life back to 2019 standards was announced by the Minister of Health, Chris Fearne, held together with the Superintendent of Public Health, Charmaine Gauci.

“We want to go towards normality, with responsibility,” said Fearne, specifying that the “recommendation” to use masks in large gatherings or mass events remains valid, but they will not be mandatory anyway. From October 2020 they were everywhere, outdoors and indoors, and until last autumn the non-use was sanctioned with fines of more than 50 euros.

If the obligation to submit the traceability form (dPLF) disappears, which, introduced with the reopening of the borders in July 2020, imposed long lines at the airport for almost two years, even after May 2, Malta remains confirmed for travelers. the obligation to present either a vaccination / recovery certificate or the negative result of a PCR test performed within the last 72 hours. The classification of countries of origin in ‘red’ or ‘dark red’ remains in force.

The minister justified the choice by referring to the “constantly low” number of hospitalizations in intensive care.

Currently out of a total of 88 people hospitalized at Mater Dei polyclinic and positive for the virus, only 39 are being treated for symptoms from Covid and of these only two are in Itu. And he recalled that 97% of the population over 6 years old in Malta is vaccinated and that 80% also received the third dose. (HANDLE).
