Turkey: Erdogan defends life imprisonment for activist Kavala

(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, APRIL 27 – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan defended the life sentence imposed on human rights activist Osman Kavala, accusing him of being “the man of Soros in Turkey” and “the coordinator “behind the 2013 anti-government protests.” The decision regarding this individual disturbed some circles, “said the Turkish president, as reported by Anadolu, defending the choice of the court and affirming that the rule of law is in force in Turkey.

An Istanbul court on Monday sentenced Kavala to life in prison for attempting to overthrow the government because of his support for the 2013 Gezi Park anti-government protests. Seven other defendants were sentenced in the same case to 18 years in prison.

After the ruling, the European Union, Germany and the United States have asked for the activist’s release, in line with a decision of the European Court of Human Rights in 2019. (ANSA).
