Aiea, situation in Chernobyl not considered to be of grave danger

(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 28 – The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (Aiea) Rafael Grossi said today that although there has been “a small increase” in the levels of radiation in Chernobyl, we are still “significantly at below the authorized levels for workers in an environment with this type of radiation “. The CNN reports, specifying that IAEA experts have visited the Chernobyl site in recent days to measure radiation levels. The closed nuclear power plant returned to Ukrainian hands after being taken over by the Russian military earlier this month.

“The situation cannot be judged as a serious danger to the environment or to people at the time we were taking these measurements,” Grossi added to reporters at a press conference in Vienna.

Grossi then specified that he had no information on reports indicating that Russian soldiers could “potentially die within a few months” from radiation in the Red Forest, a highly contaminated area near Chernobyl. This is the exclusion zone of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant where the Russian military dug trenches and tried to build fortifications.
