Morocco: 80 arrests for breaking fast during Ramadan

(ANSA) – RABAT, APRIL 28 – Police arrested 80 people in a Casablanca bar for breaking fast during the holy month of Ramadan. It happened yesterday afternoon, according to local newspapers; most of those arrested are teenagers.

There are videos, circulated on the Net, showing dozens of boys with faces made unrecognizable, uploaded by police cars. The bar where the arrests were made for a large number of adults, however, is owned by a Chinese citizen.

In the city center, the restaurant has already given problems for complaints from neighbors annoyed by loud noises and cigarette smoke, according to local sources.

Breaking fasting in public during Ramadan in Morocco can cost up to six months in prison. The penal code provides for this in article 222. The issue is at the center of numerous debates on the right to secularism and on the freedom of choice. But incidents like the Casablanca one occur in all cities, every Ramadan. (HANDLE).
