(ANSA) – CONAKRY, 01 MAY – The head of the military junta of Guinea Conakry announced that he had opted for a transition period of “39 months” before returning power to civilians, thus challenging Guinea’s regional partners who are asking for a much shorter wait.
“A proposal for a 39-month consensual transition emerges from all the consultations undertaken at all levels,” Colonel Mamady Doumbouya said in a televised address to the Nation.
The official, who overthrew President Alpha Condé in September by proclaiming himself head of state, made the remarks after two controversial political consultations – a so-called reconciliation conference and “an inclusive consultation framework” – both defected from a large number of political parties.
“The National Assembly and Development Committee, (governing body of the junta, ed) and the government will submit to the National Transitional Council, which replaces the Parliament, this proposal drawn up following extensive and patient consultations”, declared the colonel-president.
At the end of March, angered by the manifest refusal to call free elections aimed at restoring power to civilians, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) urged the Conakry authorities to present a program “no later than April 25” “acceptable” transition, under penalty of extending the economic sanctions imposed on the country after the coup.
