Finland wants to strengthen security on its border with the Russian Federation. Thus, more effective border barriers are planned to be installed in critical sections of the eastern border.

This is reported by mtvuutiset.fi.

It is noted that at present the border between Finland and the Russian Federation is fenced only with a “thin and rusty barbed wire fence.”

Colonel Mark Turunen, Commander of the North Karelia Border Service, said the assessment of the need to install new border fences is “on paper”.

“If such a decision is made (to build border fences), then we will act in a controlled and planned manner. To start building fences on the eastern border, either in the most important areas, or wider, is a big decision. This is a serious change in our system and therefore requires decisions on highest level”, – he said.

Turunen did not comment on how much border fence should be built at the border or how long the critical sections are.

The commander added that the checkpoints on the border and the places adjacent to them, of course, are the most dangerous places. But there are other risk zones near the Russian border. He did not provide more details.

The Finnish Ministry of the Interior says preparations for building border barriers are part of the country’s operational readiness.
