(ANSA) – MADRID, 03 MAY – “I will not apply for the renewal of the party presidency, although I will appreciate it very much and I will feel very honored to be able to give you a last farewell as president in person”: writes Carles Puigdemont, former regional president of Catalonia, in a letter to the militants of Junts for Catalunya (JxCat), the independence group of which it is currently number one. The message was previewed by the Catalan newspaper Ara.
The party, adds the letter, will renew its presidency at a congress to be held on June 4 in the south of France. Puigdemont has lived in Belgium since 2017, when he left Spain after the secessionist attempt of the government he directed (from 2016 to 2017), later he became wanted by the Spanish justice. “For some time now I have come to the conclusion that the party needs a more involved president than I was,” writes the former Catalan president in his message to the militants.
