Turkey: Cavusoglu in Israel on the 25th for normalization

(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, 03 MAY – Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has announced that he will make an official visit to Israel on 25 May to carry out the normalization process of relations between Turkey and the Jewish state.

“We will go to Israel on May 25, we will make assessments with the foreign minister and then we will make the decision,” Cavusoglu said, as reported by Hurriyet, regarding the possibility of mutually appointing new ambassadors in both countries.

The holders of diplomatic missions in Turkey and Israel were withdrawn from both countries in 2018 following the riots in Gaza following the choice of former US President Donald Trump to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

After years of difficult relations during the administration led by former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also due to Ankara’s support for the Palestinian cause, in recent months Turkey and Israel have started a process of normalization of relations. Israeli President Isaac Herzog traveled to Ankara to meet with Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in March, becoming Israel’s first leader to visit Turkey in 14 years.

Erdogan recently expressed his desire to find energy cooperation with Israel with the prospect of bringing Israeli gas to Europe via Turkish territory. (HANDLE).
