Leading world media continue to cover events in Ukraine. Publications discuss the embargo of Russian oil, the shortage of gas in Europe and the likelihood of Moscow using nuclear weapons.
The site “Today” offers an overview of the Western mass media.
US intelligence helped the Armed Forces to destroy Russian generals
The New York Times, citing anonymous sources in the US government, writes that US intelligence about the movement of command posts of the Russian armies allowed Ukraine to launch strikes that killed Russian generals. It is noted that Ukraine strikes by combining American data with its own – including intercepts of communications that allow us to conclude that there are senior officers in the headquarters. Ukrainian officials said 12 frontline generals had been killed, a number that surprised military analysts.
The embargo on Russian oil imports will reduce the economy of the Russian Federation
The American edition of The Wall Street Journal reports that the EU embargo on Russian oil imports, starting in the summer, will reduce the Russian economy by up to 20% this year. However, an embargo that was limited to oil imports would have limited effect. Oil and gas revenue accounted for 45% of Russia’s federal budget in 2021, according to the IEA. The oil embargo is demanded by Ukrainian companies DTEK, Naftogaz and Ukrenergo through the #StopBloodyEnergy project.
Russia will lose two million barrels of oil per day
Bloomberg reports that the EU import ban could reduce Russian oil production by another 10%. By the end of the year, Russia will lose production of two million barrels a day. The Kremlin is already threatening that the embargo will cost Europe dearly.
Russia may use nuclear weapons
The German magazine Der Spiegel informs that fears of a nuclear attack are increasing due to the escalation of the war in Ukraine. According to Moscow, it has now conducted a test of “electronic launch” of ballistic missile systems. This should be taken as a signal and a threat to use nuclear weapons.
Stopping Russian gas supplies to Europe is quite likely
The French newspaper LeFigaro writes that a halt in Russian gas supplies is quite likely. The French energy company still refuses to pay Moscow in rubles. The next payment is at the end of May. The scenario of stopping Russian gas supplies, which the Europeans are so afraid of, remains “plausible.”
Earlier, the Segodnya website reported that the European Union wants to cooperate more actively with African countries in order to get rid of dependence on Russian gas. The external energy strategy of the EU countries implies that Europe will be able to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Nigeria, Angola and Senegal.
We also informed that the GIPL gas pipeline to ensure the energy independence of the countries of the Baltic region has already been launched between Poland and Lithuania.
