An attack on an artisanal mining deposit in the northeast of Democratic Republic of Congo left at least 47 dead. THE outrage took place this Sunday, 8, in the vicinity of Mambilidei, in the territory of Djugu, by the rebel group Cooperativa para o Desenvolvimento do Congo (Codeco). “An authentic carnage by Codeco militiamen, who murdered 47 civilians, while many others are missing, and houses were set on fire,” said the coordinator of civil society groups in the province of Ituri, Jean Bosco Lalo. Created in 2018, Codeco aims to fight against abuses by the Congolese Army, although it has carried out killings of civilians and has progressively increased attacks in recent years in Ituri. Since mid-November last year, suspected insurgents from the armed group have attacked settlements in the province and killed dozens of people. According to the High Commissioner of UN for Human Rights, in 2021, the group murdered more than 400 citizens, and became the second deadliest militia in the region.
