Lithuania called for the creation of an international tribunal to investigate war crimes of the Russian army in Ukraine
On May 10, the Lithuanian Seimas voted to recognize Russia as a terrorist state.
The Lithuanian parliament unanimously supported the relevant resolution – 128 votes in favor, according to Delfi.lt.
In the resolution, the Seim stated that the Russian armed forces and mercenaries had committed mass war crimes on the territory of Ukraine, especially in the cities of Bucha, Irpen, Mariupol, Borodianka and Gostomel.
According to the document, the goal of the complete or partial destruction of the Ukrainian nation, its spirit is seen by killing its members by entire families, including children, kidnapping them, torturing, raping, including minors, mocking the bodies of those killed and tortured.
“The Seimas of Lithuania recognizes the full-scale armed aggression against Ukraine by the armed forces of the Russian Federation and its political and military leadership, which began on February 24, 2022, as the genocide of the Ukrainian people,” the resolution says.
It also emphasizes that all perpetrators must be held accountable and that the international community must establish a Special International Criminal Tribunal to investigate and evaluate Russia’s aggression against sovereign Ukraine. The Lithuanian Seimas calls for this tribunal to have the power to issue international arrest warrants and that immunity should not be limited to the immunity of the state or heads of state and government and other public officials.
“The Russian Federation, whose armed forces deliberately and systematically select civilian targets for bombing, is a state that supports and carries out terrorism,” the resolution says.
Zelensky urged to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier that the Russian Federation should be recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism.
“We are working to ensure that all Russian government officials who support this shameful war receive a logical sanctions response from the democratic world. Russia must be recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism, and the Russian armed forces must be recognized as a terrorist organization,” Zelensky said.
In turn, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported the appeal to the House of Representatives and the Senate of the US Congress to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
