Haiti: gang clashes north of Port-au-Prince, 148 dead

(ANSA) – BUENOS AIRES, MAY 11 – At least 148 people have died in recent days in the region north of Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, due to a wave of violence triggered by local crime. This was announced by the Haitian National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (Rnddh).

In a press conference yesterday, according to the Cuban news agency Prensa Latina, the NGO specified that the figure concerns the period between April 24 and the first days of May and that among the most affected places, with 95 fatal victims, are .Butte Boyer, Mrécage, Corridor Djo and Santo 2. Here 17 corpses were burned and another 30 buried in mass graves.

The Rnddh criticized the weak response from law enforcement and stigmatized that criminal gangs (Mawozo 400 and Chen Mechan) acted with incredible violence, beheading people and killing them in cold blood.

In the region that gathers these cities, called the Cul de Sac plain where at least 9,000 people have fled their homes, the NGO finally indicated, serious material damage was caused, with the fire of 81 buildings and 57 vehicles.

In the last few hours, the Haitian national police have assured that they have regained control of the territory, even if the population maintains a cautious attitude, reducing travel to a minimum. (HANDLE).
