(ANSA-AFP) – MOGADISCIO, MAY 16 – Somalia’s international partners today welcomed yesterday’s election of President Hassan Sheickh Mohamud, which took place after months of political instability and jihadist attacks, in addition to the severe drought affecting the country of the Horn of Africa. Britain’s Minister for Africa, Vicky Ford, congratulated Mohamud, saying that her country wants to “continue its close collaboration with the aim of supporting the construction of stability, countering Al-Shabaab and supporting those which are affected by the devastating drought “.

The organization Intergovernmental Authority for Development (Igad) declared that this victory is “a clear testimony of the confidence and security that the people of Somalia have in the qualities of their leadership”. Mohamud, former head of state between 2012 and 2017 and the first leader to win the second presidential term in the African nation, has promised to transform Somalia into a “peaceful country at peace with the world”.
