(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 19 – The restrictions of the Taliban against Afghan women are tightened. After being ordered to wear the veil in public, TV presenters have now been required to cover their faces while on the air.
The order is contained in a decree published yesterday, reports a spokesman for the religious police to the BBC in Pashto.
The announcement comes two weeks after all women were ordered to wear headscarves in public. Otherwise they will face punishment. Not only that: they are forbidden to travel without male relatives and secondary schools remain closed for girls.
The new decree has been the subject of sharp criticism on Twitter, and many call it another step by the Taliban to promote extremism. “The world distributes face masks to protect people from Covid. The Taliban deploy them to protect people from seeing journalists’ faces. For the Taliban, women are a disease,” one activist tweeted.
The private news channel Shamshad has posted a photo of its presenter wearing a face mask and other similar images are being shared on social media in protest.
