Congo: one and a half tons of ivory seized

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 19 – The authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo have seized a ton and a half of elephant ivory in the south-east of the country, as revealed by officials, in one of the largest loot recorded in recent years in Africa. This was announced by Al Jazeera, specifying that officials discovered the fangs aboard trucks in the city of Lubumbashi on Saturday.

Police arrested five people, but two fled after being questioned, said an official who asked for anonymity because there is an investigation underway, stating that the booty amounted to 1.5 tons. Both the origin and the final destination of the ivory remain unclear.

The seizure of ivory is one of the largest reported on the African continent. In 2013, Kenyan officials implemented several, one of them weighing four tons, the same amount seized in 2014 by the Togolese authorities.
