India: 3 elephants overwhelmed by train, herd prevents approaching

(ANSA) – NEW DELHI, MAY 20 – Three elephants were overwhelmed at dawn this morning by a freight train loaded with wheat in the eastern state of Odisha.

The pachyderms, an adult specimen and two cubs, were crossing the railway line, on which passenger trains normally travel, used in recent weeks for the transport of goods.

The animals did not die on the spot, but it was impossible to cure them: shortly after the accident, say the managers of the nearby natural park, the vets arrived on the spot, but were unable to get close to the injured, because the other elephants in the herd they surrounded them and remained motionless, watching over them, for hours, emitting excruciating trumpets.

Over the past decade, at least 36 elephants have lost their lives in Odisha in train collisions; the last incident dates back to last December, when a couple was overwhelmed on the same line. (HANDLE).
