Ukraine, Pentagon evaluates sending troops to US embassy

(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, MAY 22 – The Pentagon and the US State Department are evaluating the possibility of sending special forces to protect the US embassy in Kiev.

Defense Department spokesman John Kirby told The Washington Post confirming the Wall Street Journal’s advances. “We are examining the security conditions” of the diplomatic office in Ukraine “but no decision has been taken,” Kirby stressed.

The Wall Street Journal revealed that US military officials and diplomats are considering sending special forces to protect the US embassy in the Ukrainian capital, which has just reopened.

The proposal has not yet been presented to US President Joe Biden, the sources point out. If the decision were to be made, the presence of US troops in Ukraine would escalate from Biden’s initial promise that no American soldiers would set foot in Ukraine. (HANDLE).
