(ANSA) – ATHENS, MAY 23 – Greece announced today that it has prevented about 600 migrants who were aiming to cross the Aegean from neighboring Turkey, in what is defined as the largest entry attempt this year.
A spokesman for the Greek coast guard said five sailboats and four dinghies left the Turkish coast early this morning. “The Greek patrol vessels were able to quickly locate the dinghies and banks and notify the Turkish coast guard,” the spokesman said.
“All the incidents occurred within Turkish territorial waters” between the Greek islands of Chios and Samos, he later specified.
Athens regularly blames Ankara for not taking sufficient action to curb people smugglers who send migrants onto unsafe boats and rafts from its shores, in violation of a 2016 agreement with the European Union. (HANDLE).
