(ANSA-AFP) – JAKARTA, MAY 23 – Indonesia today summoned British ambassador Owen Jenkins in response to a rainbow LGBT flag raised by the London embassy in Jakarta to remind him of the country’s “cultural and religious values”, where same-sex relationships remain taboo.
The British Embassy last week published a photo of the rainbow flag hoisted next to the national flag on its Instagram account, on the occasion of the international day against homophobia, with a message of support for the rights of the LGBT community.
“This action, as well as the posting (of the photo) on the embassy’s official social media account, is very disrespectful,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said today. “The ministry wishes to remind foreign ambassadors to respect the sensitivity of cultural and religious values,” he added.
