Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara will soon launch a new military operation along its southern borders. Its goal is to create 30-kilometer safe zones to deal with terrorist threats from these regions.
It is reported by Reuters.
According to Erdogan, the operation will begin as soon as the military, intelligence and security forces complete their preparations.
“The main target of this operation will be areas that are the centers of attacks on our country and safe zones,” Erdogan said, without going into details.
According to Reuters, the operation is likely will be aimed at northern Syriawhere Turkey has carried out several military operations since 2016 to undermine the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), an armed Syrian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The YPG also helped form the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Kurdish-led coalition that the United States has relied heavily on to fight the Islamic State since 2014.
Erdogan’s remarks came amid Turkish objections to Finland and Sweden joining NATO, accusing them of harboring individuals linked to the PKK group and followers of a cleric whom Turkey accuses of masterminding the 2016 coup attempt.
As you know, Syria is headed by Bashar al-Assad, who maintains warm relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
