He was the finance minister of Kabul, now he is an Uber driver in the USA

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 24 – Until last August, Khalid Payenda was the finance minister of Afghanistan. Nine months after the withdrawal of US troops from Kabul airport, Payenda’s life has totally changed: he is now an Uber driver in Washington. It’s the bizarre story told by the BBC.

Today Payenda spends his days behind the wheel of his Honda Accord, but that’s not all. He also works as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, where he is paid $ 2,000 per semester.

“You can stay projected into the past, complaining, or you can roll up your sleeves and move on,” says the former treasury minister. “So I started giving some passes and I was amazed: I was getting paid a lot more than I expected,” he points out.

Payenda had resigned as finance minister a week before the Taliban took over Kabul. His relationship with Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, president of the now defunct Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, was definitively compromised. Fearing arrest, the former minister decided to leave for the United States and lay the foundations for a new life. (HANDLE).
