USA: primary in 5 states, Pence-Trump duel in Georgia

(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, MAY 24 – New round of primaries today in the US in view of the Midterm elections which in November will renew the entire House and a third of the Senate. Voting takes place in Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Arkansas and Minnesota. All eyes are on Peach State, for the long-distance duel between Mike Pence and Donald Trump in a test that could mark the tycoon’s first bitter defeat.

Pence, like much of the party, supports outgoing Governor Brian Kemp but the former president supports his rival, former Senator David Perdue, in revenge for his refusal to overturn the presidential vote in Georgia. The polls, however, give Kemp the winner with a large advantage, who in case of victory will have to contend again with the star dem Stacey Abrams, defeated only by a whisker in ’18. For the same reason, Trump has sided against outgoing Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, backing his rival Jody Hice.

To snatch the senatorial seat from dem Raphael Warnock, Trump has instead bet on a controversial candidate: football legend Herschel Walker, accused of threatening his ex-wife, inflating his business results and lying about his graduation. Another test for the tycoon is the endorsement of perhaps even more controversial Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, known for embracing conspiracy theories, encouraging violence and racism.
