Iran: death toll of Metropol building collapse rises to 18

(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, MAY 26 – The death toll has risen to 18 after the collapse of the Metropol commercial building on Monday in the southwestern city of Abadan, in the Khuzestan province of Iran. The news agency Irna said, citing a statement by the city prefect Ehsan Abbaspour according to which “the exact number of people still trapped under the rubble is not clear” while 37 have been saved and the rescue operations continue. An investigation was opened to determine the causes of the collapse while at least 10 people, including the mayor and two former mayors, were arrested on suspicion of being “responsible” for the incident, state TV said. .

According to numerous videos shared on social media, last night there were protests in Abadan with hundreds of people calling for the resignation of the government praising the dynasty of the last Shah of Persia Reza Pahlavi. Spontaneous protests against the authorities of the Islamic republic, held by the crowd responsible for the collapse of the building due to alleged negligence, have taken place every day since Monday.
