US: $ 2 million tabernacle stolen from NY Catholic church

(ANSA) – NEW YORK, MAY 31 – A gold tabernacle worth two million dollars was stolen from a Catholic church in Brooklyn. The relic was located in St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, known as the ‘Notre Dame’ of Park Slope (borough of Brooklyn) and was removed after the protective case was cut with a power saw.

In the operation, the thief decapitated the statue of an angel and then scattered the hosts kept inside the tabernacle on the altar.

It is not clear when exactly the theft occurred. It is speculated between Thursday and Saturday last week, when the church was closed for construction and the thief also stole the security cameras. According to the reverend Frank Tumino, pastor of the church of St Augustine, the tabernacle is irreplaceable for its historical value. It was built at the end of the 19th century and has been inside the church ever since. It is one of the most valuable tabernacles in the United States and was apparently protected by a thief-proof security system. Tumino commented that the theft is a wicked act of irreverence.
