(ANSA) – NEW YORK, JUN 01 – After the shooting in the New York subway in April, Mayor Eric Adams is evaluating the installation of metal detectors to detect weapons in the ‘subway’ stations, in order to prevent further massacres .
Adams wants to use the same kind of devices found in theme parks and sports stadiums, a technology that works, but for the experts it is a difficult, if not impossible, mission. The problem would not be so much to use technology – they explained to the US media – but to have enough personnel to be able to deal with those who carry weapons illegally.
“Logistically it would be a nightmare, you would have to use a lot of agents to do it,” explained James Dooley, a retired NYPD captain who served in the transportation division. “We have hundreds of stations and putting someone at each entrance is logistically impossible,” he continued.
Adams, a former police captain, acknowledged the challenges but said it is worth testing this system in selected locations as a deterrent. “We want to be able to be surprise present at certain stops as is the case with car checkpoints,” he explained. (HANDLE).
