(ANSA) – NEW YORK, JUNE 01 – The Mayor of New York Eric Adams is evaluating the possibility of declaring a state of emergency for violence with firearms in the city. The New York Times reports this, citing some sources, according to which Adams intends to appoint a ‘tsar’ to prevent violence in the city whose tasks are not clear.

From 2019 to 2021, firearm incidents in New York doubled from 777 to 1,562, climbing to their highest levels since 2006.

Since taking office, former agent Adams has reinforced security in the subway by increasing the presence of policemen and has also relaunched a previously abolished anti-weapons division due to reported abuses.

“This is the battle of our times in terms of civil rights, we must address not only how weapons destroy individuals but how they destroy the anatomy of our communities and cities,” Adams said. (HANDLE).
