Biden calls for action, ‘we must do something about weapons’

(ANSA) – NEW YORK, 02 JUN – “We have to do something this time” on weapons: “it is not a question of snatching someone’s weapons or defaming those who have weapons legally” but “how many other carnage are we willing to accept?”. US President Joe Biden said this when speaking to Americans in a speech to the nation after mass shootings in the country have risen to over 200 since the beginning of the year.

His appeal was mainly addressed to the Republican majority Senate. Existing protections for the arms industry are “outrageous, they must end,” the president said. “It is time for the Senate to do something about weapons,” he added, calling Republicans “unconscious” who refuse even to start the debate on weapons.

“We have to ban assault weapons. And if we can’t ban them then we raise the age to buy them. We have to tighten controls” on purchase, Biden said, asking Congress to act on weapons with common sense measures. “The Second Amendment of the Constitution – he underlined – is not absolute, the rights it provides are not unlimited”.
