Usa: airfare bleeding, increases of 50% compared to 2021

(ANSA) – NEW YORK, June 03 – Bloodletting for travelers in the week of Memorial Day. Air fares have registered increases of 50% compared to the previous year. This was reported by some American media citing an analysis by Cowen, a company that deals with financial services. The price increases affected all major American airlines: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. The increases were caused by several factors. According to a study by the Mastercard Economics Institute, reservations, even for international travel, have returned to levels even higher than the pre-pandemic period. At the end of last April there was an increase of 25% compared to the period before 2020. Despite this, the airlines are struggling with the increase in personnel costs, maintenance costs and in general operating costs. However, what weighs most is the lack of places compared to an excess of demand. In particular, there are not enough planes for international routes. As airline consultant Robert Mann pointed out, “it’s the market that responds to excess demand.” (HANDLE).
