The granting of Ukrainian citizenship to the opposition Russian journalist and publicist Alexander Nevzorov and his wife Lydia did not arouse enthusiasm in Ukrainian society. The former compatriot of Vladimir Putin was reminded of his entire biography and even the biography of his grandfather.

The site “Today” has studied what is wrong with citizen Nevzorov.

Biography

The main claim against Nevzorov is that in 2012 he was included in the list of proxies of Russian presidential candidate Vladimir Putin. At the same time, then Putin went to the presidency for the third time, which violates generally accepted democratic norms. During the election campaign, Nevzorov actively campaigned for Putin.

“Vladimir Vladimirovich is the only one who can keep the empire from falling apart every second from catastrophe,” Izvestia quoted the journalist at the time.

The second claim is that Nevzorov is the author of the Nashi report on the January 1991 events in Latvia, which justified the actions of the riot police in the republic during the dispersal of the protest for independence. In fact, the picture made heroes out of special forces, against whom criminal cases were initiated in Latvia. Then five people died. Observers note that this film appeared only because the maternal grandfather of the journalist Georgy Vladimirovich Nevzorov was a general of the MGB, who in 1946-1955 headed the department for combating banditry in the territory of the Lithuanian SSR.

It is also interesting that in November 1991, Nevzorov announced the creation of the Nashi People’s Liberation Movement, which became the forerunner of the pro-Kremlin youth movement of the same name.

The role of Nevzorov in justifying the First Chechen War is not forgotten. He devoted two films “Hell” (1995) and “Purgatory” (1997) to this conflict, where, as Russian oppositionists noted, he showed a bias towards Chechens who wanted their independence.

Whose Crimea

Nevzorov has always been opposed to the annexation of Crimea by Russia. “If Crimea was taken from a strong, rich, brave country, it would be a noble and honest victory. But it was taken from a bleeding, wounded, immobilized country. This is called looting,” Alexander Nevzorov wrote in his blog a few days after the so-called referendum on the peninsula captured by Russian soldiers.

Now the journalist is known as one of the brightest critics of the Russian war in Ukraine, which he does regularly on his YouTube channel. Because of this, on March 22, 2022, the Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case against Nevzorov for publicly distributing deliberately false information about the actions of the Russian army under the guise of reliable reports.

Since May 4, Nevzorov has been put on the wanted list in Russia.

Criticism

Immediately the question arose of granting our citizenship to foreigners who have been fighting the Russian occupiers as volunteers for more than a year.

Ukrainians do not understand how now to “look into the eyes” of the Baltic allies.

The opinion is being expressed that Nevzorov is responsible for the Putin who is now killing Ukrainians.

However, there are also voices of support.

“Nevzorov has consistently supported Ukraine since the Maidan days. He does not hide the fact that he was to a certain extent a fascist. But I would not repel Nevzorov simply as a vivid example of the transformation of a Russofascist into a normal person. Now he passionately and expressively supports Ukraine, he fiercely stigmatizes the Kremlin Fuhrer, and calls Putin his rabid maniac. Nevzorov is definitely on our side,” wrote, for example, publisher Pavel Montag on Facebook.
