Iran: Khamenei accuses enemies, foment protests

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, accused Iran’s “enemies” of fomenting unrest to try to overthrow the Islamic Republic.
In a public intervention, according to reports from the BBC online, the ayatollah argues that those who oppose Tehran hope to use the protests to deal a blow to the country. His statements follow the demonstrations against the rising cost of basic foods that have been going on in Tehran and in several Iranian cities for several weeks. The collapse of a building in the south of the country last month, in which 37 people died, sparked further protests as citizens blame the authorities for the incident, blaming them for “neglect and corruption”. In his speech, the Ayatollah has long insisted that US sanctions are responsible for the surge in food prices.
The enemy “hopes to turn the people against the Islamic Republic by psychological means, through the Internet, money and the mobilization of mercenaries,” Khamenei said.
“Americans and Westerners have miscalculated in the past on various issues,” he added. “Even today, it is a miscalculation that they think they can make the Iranian nation oppose the Islamic Republic.”
