Bangladesh: explosion in container depot, at least 15 dead

(ANSA) – DACCA, June 05 – At least 15 people were killed and 170 injured in an explosion that took place in a private container depot near Bangladesh’s largest port, Chittagong, in the southeast, following a fire. This was reported by international agencies, including the Spanish Efe. Two firefighters died and 11 others are missing. The other two victims are allegedly police officers. An act of sabotage is not excluded. The magnitude of the explosion is no less than what we saw in Beirut in Lebanon a few years ago, “said the spokesman for the Bangladesh Container Association, Ruhul Amin Sikder.” We have 14 bodies here. Another dead body is at the Park View private hospital, “Mohammad Alauddin, an officer of the police outpost at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, told EFE. Other injuries were taken to private hospitals.”

Many of the injured had their hands or legs cut off, and at least three people suffered burns over 65% of their bodies and were transferred to a military hospital. There were thousands of shipping containers in the warehouse and some of them contained highly flammable chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide.

At the time of the fire, there were about 250 workers in the warehouse. The cause is not yet clear. An act of sabotage is not excluded. (HANDLE).
