Colombia: runoff, Hernandez-Petro confrontation uncertain

The electoral campaign for the presidential ballot scheduled in Colombia for June 19 is in full swing, and polls do not yet suggest a clear winner for the succession to outgoing president Iván Duque.

The latest survey of the moods of the Colombian electorate carried out by the Guarumo SAS, EcoAnalítica Medición and Conceptos Económicos institutes, published today by the daily newspaper El Tiempo, assigns 46.4% to the independent conservative candidate of the Liga de Gobernantes Anticorrupción, Rodolfo Hernández, left rival of Pacto Histórico, Gustavo Petro, 43.3%.

Petro won in the first round on 29 May with 40.32% of the votes against Hernández’s 28.15%, to whom, however, various center-right and right-wing candidates offered their support. On the other hand, the opinion of the Centro Nacional de Consultoría (CNC) is different, according to which Petro enjoys the favor of the electorate with 44.9% of the votes, against 41% collected by his independent rival.

Finally, it should be noted that according to the daily presidential tracking carried out by the GED3 institute for RCN and FM radios and the newspaper La República, yesterday there was a technical tie between Hernández (47.9%) and Petro (46.3%) since the survey implies a possible error of +/- 1.9%.
