Israel: Law Settlements, Test Bench for Bennett Government

(ANSA) – TEL AVIV, 06 JUN – New test bench for the survival of the government of Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid. The Knesset is called to vote today on the thorny law on renewing Israeli civil laws for residents of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

Although three readings are needed for the final launch, the government is currently not certain of having a majority, starting from 60 seats equal to those of the opposition. There is resistance to the law within the coalition, especially from the Arab Islamist party, Raam of Mansour Abbas, which is decisive with its 4 seats. If the law does not pass, the current Minister of Justice Gideon Saar (leader of the right-wing ‘New Hope’ party) has announced direct consequences on the executive’s estate.
