(ANSAMed) – BEIRUT, JUN 07 – The president of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri, announced today in Beirut that American mediator Amos Hochstein will be in Lebanon in the next few days, in charge of facilitating negotiations between Lebanese and Israelis on the sharing of energy resources off the coasts of the two countries.
US press sources, citing State Department spokesman Ned Price, deny that Hochstein has a trip to Lebanon on his agenda.
Over the weekend, high-ranking Lebanese institutional officials had strongly protested Israel’s start of works to extract natural gas at sea from a field located in the eastern Mediterranean waters disputed between the two countries.
The Lebanese Shiite armed movement Hezbollah, an ally of Iran, reiterated yesterday that it is ready to unleash a new war with Israel if the Jewish state does not put an end to what the President of the Lebanese Republic Michel Aoun and outgoing Prime Minister Najib Miqati have defined a “hostile act”.
