The US has received an arrest warrant for two planes of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich over alleged sanctions violations.
This is reported by Bloomberg, citing documents released by the office of US Attorney Demian Williams.
What is known?
On Monday, US Magistrate Judge Sarah L. Cave signed an arrest warrant for the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and Gulfstream G650ER. The cost of aircraft in the amount exceeds 400 million dollars.
It is noted that Abramovich is not on the list of Russian oligarchs against whom the US has imposed sanctions due to the war in Ukraine, but the Commerce Department claims that he violated the sanctions by re-exporting the aircraft to Russia without the necessary license. Dreamliner has been in Dubai since March, while Gulfstream has been in Moscow since then, according to FBI evidence.
The prosecution of Abramovich’s planes was possible because the sanctions prohibit the export, re-export or domestic transfer of American-made aircraft without a license, officials said.
“Russian oligarchs helped create an environment that allowed Russia to wage a deadly war in Ukraine. The seizure of their valuable property, including these two aircraft, is just one way to bring to justice those who violate US laws and support Russia in its attempt to conquer a sovereign nation.”FBI Assistant Director Michael J. Driscoll said in a statement.
