Sudan: at least 27 dead in separate inter-community clashes

(ANSA) – KHARTOUM, JUN 07 – At least 27 people have died in heavy fighting between communities in the west and south of Sudan with dozens of injured, local citizens report, while the UN envoy to the country expresses his profound worry. Separate fighting erupted in the Darfur region over a land dispute that resulted in 16 deaths, as well as 11 casualties in that of South Kordofan after a fight between two people resulted in a larger firefight.

This latest violence comes during a crisis that began with the military coup of last October 25 led by the army general, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. In West Darfur, an arid region bordering Chad, the clashes took place near Kolbus, about 160 kilometers from the state capital El Geneina.

The attackers set fire to villages, razing them to the ground. The disputes pitted permanent farmers against semi-nomadic Arab shepherds. (HANDLE).
