Balkans: US support for regional collaboration

The United States supports the ‘Open Balkan’ initiative and any other project aimed at bringing the Balkan region closer to the EU and promoting stability. This was stated by the US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, in a video link intervention with the regional summit underway in Ohird, in North Macedonia.
“The United States does not look at the Balkans as a war region, but through the prism of possibilities of the 21st century, and the possibilities of the region are enormous. The Western Balkans has an extremely favorable geographical position, possesses great resources and spirit. entrepreneurial “, said Escobar, adding that this region has the potential to become a center of renewable energy, which is positive in light of climate change, and has the ability to also become a center of liquid natural gas helping Europe to free itself from dependence on Russian gas, and at the same time it can become a nerve center for transport, technology, also due to its high growth rates.
“The US supports ‘Open Balkan’, but we are for integration and collaboration in wider European structures. Cross-border collaboration in the Western Balkans must be directed towards wider European integration,” said the American diplomat, quoted by regional media . However, he noted, for the initiative to be successful it is necessary that “all six countries of the region join the same level”.
