Usa, Biden wants to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes

(ANSA) – NEW YORK, JUN 10 – American President Joe Biden wants to reduce nicotine in all cigarettes sold in the United States to minimum levels, or at least to non-addictive levels. The Wall Street Journal reports it citing some sources, according to which the process is still long.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must in fact publish the proposal on reducing nicotine levels and then wait to receive public comments before the final decision. Tobacco companies could sue against the latter, lengthening the time for its entry into force.

The initiative would be the most ambitious and far-reaching since 1998, when Big Tobacco paid $ 200 billion to help US states pay for smokers’ healthcare costs.
