Most of the children in Beijing will not return to school next week as originally planned. Chinese officials said today following the new Covid-19 epidemic which prompted the authorities to partially revoke the decision to resume teaching face-to-face.
China is the last major world economy still committed to a zero-Covid strategy, with a health policy that includes targeted lockdowns, mass tests and long quarantines. But virus clusters in recent months have put a strain on this approach. The Shanghai megacity was forced into a month-long lockdown and schools in the capital Beijing were closed and residents ordered to work from home.
