Di Maio, South Tyrol model of dialogue and coexistence

(ANSA) – BOLZANO, 11 JUN – “South Tyrolean autonomy is a concrete model for Europe and for the entire international community. In this truly difficult international situation, the South Tyrolean model of dialogue and coexistence is very relevant, especially in light of the Russian aggression in Ukraine. Every possible diplomatic way out of the Ukrainian crisis also involves an effective solution to the problem of minorities in the future framework of peace “. This was stated by the Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio, speaking in Bolzano for the 30th anniversary of the release receipt.

“The South Tyrolean model – added Di Maio – has aroused growing international attention, because it offers itself as a virtuous example of dialogue and consensual solution in disputes and protection of minorities in the context of harmonious development”.

“The petrifaction of South Tyrolean autonomy must be avoided, otherwise it runs the risk of being eroded. The success of the South Tyrolean model lies precisely in its constant development, guaranteeing a win win situation” for all. Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said so. According to the Austrian minister, “things that work are not taken for granted, as is often believed, it is enough to think of Ukraine, where even the right to exist of an entire people is questioned”.

South Tyrol, with the presence of various linguistic groups that coexist peacefully, “is a small Europe in Europe”.

Governor Arno Kompatscher said this, underlining that autonomy has guaranteed positive development for all linguistic groups, as now also for new citizens. Alto Adige – he continued – “is a success story for the effective protection of minorities”. The special representative of the United Nations for minority issues Fernand De Varennes also spoke in Bolzano and spoke of “an anniversary of success, peace and stability”.
