Syria, serious damage to Damascus airport after Israel raid

(ANSA) – DAMASCUS, 11 JUN – Syria has confirmed serious damage to the Damascus international airport, closed again today for a second day for repairs after the Israeli air attacks. The transport ministry has announced that the runways are out of order.

Since the outbreak of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes against its neighboring country, targeting government troops, Iranian-backed allied forces and fighters of the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah. But these attacks have rarely caused major flight disruptions.

The ministry said air traffic will remain suspended until repair work is completed and airport security ensured.

“Civil aviation and national companies are working … to repair the considerable damage to the airport,” the ministry said, adding that one terminal was also hit. The official Syrian news agency Sana reported that a civilian was injured in the Israeli bombing. (HANDLE).
