Ghana plans to plant over 20 million trees this year

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 12 – Ghana aims to plant over 20 million trees within the year: the announcement was made by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during an event on reforestation.

Akufo-Addo, by planting an African mahogany seed, called on all Ghanaians to plant at least one tree this year to help the country reach its green goal and restore the forest cover it has lost. “Our goal is to plant at least 20 million trees this year.

This number may seem huge, but it is far below what we have lost over the years, “said the president, quoted by Map.

He also noted that his country has lost nearly 100,000 acres (over 40,400 hectares) of natural forest in the past 10 years alone and that the timber industry, which generates thousands of jobs, is suffering severely. “Ghana is racing against time in the war against climate change and to ensure food security,” Akufo-Addo noted, defining trees and forests as a necessary resource for human survival on earth and for maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
